How to Apply for a SASSA Grant

Step 1: Gather documents — SA ID, proof of residence, bank account details (if available), income proof.

Step 2: Visit your nearest SASSA office, or apply online at sassa.gov.za for SRD grants.

Step 3: Complete the application form with a SASSA official.

Step 4: SASSA will process your application (typically 3 months for Old Age/Disability). You will be notified of the outcome.

Step 5: If approved, choose payment method: SASSA card, Post Office, or bank account.

Primary caregivers of children under 18 may apply. The caregiver's income must be below R4,800/month (single) or R9,600/month (married). Both child and caregiver must be SA citizens or permanent residents. Required documents: birth certificate, caregiver ID, proof of residence, proof of relationship to child.
Grants are paid on or before the last working day of each month. Different beneficiary groups are paid on different days (older persons typically first, then persons with disabilities, then children). In December, payments are usually brought forward to around the 15th. Exact dates are published on sassa.gov.za.
The SRD (Social Relief of Distress) grant of R370/month is for South African citizens, permanent residents, or recognised refugees aged 18–59 who are unemployed, not receiving any other social grant, UIF, or NSFAS, and have a monthly income below R624. Apply online at srd.sassa.gov.za. Approved applicants are paid via bank transfer.
