Percentage Formulas

Find X% of Y: Result = (X ÷ 100) × Y

X is what % of Y: Percentage = (X ÷ Y) × 100

Percentage Change: Change % = ((New − Old) ÷ |Old|) × 100

Find Original (reverse %): Original = Result ÷ (Percentage ÷ 100)

Compound Percentage: Final = Start × (1 + r/100)ⁿ

Worked Example

Example 1: What is 20% of 450?

(20 ÷ 100) × 450 = 0.20 × 450 = 90

Example 2: 75 is what % of 300?

(75 ÷ 300) × 100 = 25%

Example 3: Price went from R120 to R150 — what is the % increase?

((150 − 120) ÷ 120) × 100 = 25% increase

Example 4 (compound): R1,000 grows at 8% p.a. for 3 years:

1000 × 1.08³ = 1000 × 1.2597 = R1,259.71

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide the percentage by 100, then multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 80 = (15 ÷ 100) × 80 = 12.
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100. Formula: ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100. Positive = increase; negative = decrease.
A percentage point is the arithmetic difference between two percentages. If interest rates go from 5% to 8%, they increased by 3 percentage points — but the percentage change is ((8−5)÷5)×100 = 60%. These are very different things.
If you know the result and the percentage, divide the result by the percentage expressed as a decimal. For example, if 30 is 15% of some number, divide 30 by 0.15 to get 200.
South Africa's VAT rate is 15%. To add VAT: multiply the price by 1.15. To find the VAT amount in a VAT-inclusive price: divide by 1.15 to get the exclusive price, then subtract. For example, R115 inclusive ÷ 1.15 = R100 exclusive; VAT = R15.
