How to Use the Pace Calculator

Choose a tab based on what you want to calculate. "Find Pace" tells you your min/km pace from a known distance and time. "Find Time" projects how long a given distance will take at your target pace. "Find Distance" shows how far you can run in a set time at a given pace.

The Extended Calculator below adds a negative split planner and uses the Riegel formula to predict race times from a known result. The Professional Calculator adds altitude and heat adjustment, a race strategy planner, and the Comrades Marathon checkpoint guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

A comfortable beginner pace is typically 7:00โ€“9:00 min/km โ€” a pace at which you can hold a conversation (the "talk test"). As fitness improves over weeks and months, pace naturally improves. Focus on completing the distance before worrying about speed.
Race projections assume you maintain the same pace throughout. In practice, longer races involve fatigue, nutrition strategies, and terrain variation, so actual times often differ โ€” especially for the marathon. These projections are best used for setting target paces and planning training runs.
Min/km (minutes per kilometre) is the standard way runners measure pace in South Africa and most metric countries. It tells you how long it takes to cover one kilometre. Km/h (kilometres per hour) is more familiar from driving and is used on treadmills. A pace of 5:00 min/km equals 12 km/h.
To finish a half marathon in under 2 hours, you need to average faster than 5:41 min/km (or about 10.5 km/h). A useful training target is to be able to run 10K in under 54 minutes (5:24 min/km pace) before attempting a sub-2:00 half.
