How to Use the Ideal Weight Calculator

Select your gender and enter your height in centimetres. The calculator applies four widely-used ideal weight formulas and shows you the full range, helping you set a realistic and evidence-based weight goal.

The Extended Calculator below shows a visual weight range chart across heights and lets you compare results by body frame size. The Professional Calculator adds all 7 formulas side by side, a wrist-based frame size estimator, and a weight loss trajectory table.

Ideal Weight Formulas

Devine (Male): 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)

Devine (Female): 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)

Robinson (Male): 52 + 1.9 × (height in inches − 60)

Robinson (Female): 49 + 1.7 × (height in inches − 60)

Miller (Male): 56.2 + 1.41 × (height in inches − 60)

Miller (Female): 53.1 + 1.36 × (height in inches − 60)

Hamwi (Male): 48 + 2.7 × (height in inches − 60)

Hamwi (Female): 45.5 + 2.2 × (height in inches − 60)

Example

Female, 168 cm (66.1 inches → 6.1 inches over 5 ft):

Devine = 45.5 + (2.3 × 6.1) = 59.5 kg

Robinson = 49 + (1.7 × 6.1) = 59.4 kg

Range across all formulas: approximately 57–61 kg

Frame Size Guide (wrist method)

Measure your wrist circumference at the narrowest point. The frame size calculator uses height-to-wrist ratio.

Males: Ratio >10.4 = small, 9.6–10.4 = medium, <9.6 = large

Females: Ratio >11.0 = small, 10.1–11.0 = medium, <10.1 = large

Your estimated frame: Medium frame

Frequently Asked Questions

Each formula was developed from a different population study in a different era. They all agree within a small range, which is why the average provides a good target. No single formula is definitively "correct" for every individual.
Not exactly. These formulas provide a guideline, but a healthy weight also depends on body composition (muscle vs fat), bone density, age, and ethnicity. An athlete may weigh more than the ideal weight range and still be very healthy.
Both are useful screening tools. The ideal weight formulas give you a specific kg target, while BMI (18.5–24.9) gives you a range. Use them together: your goal weight should ideally sit within both the ideal weight range and the healthy BMI range.
These formulas were designed for people 5 feet or taller (152 cm+). For heights below this, the formulas default to the base weight (50 kg for men, 45.5 kg for women in the Devine formula) and may be less accurate. Consult your doctor for personalised guidance.
