Frequently Asked Questions
Technically, the BCEA requires leave to be taken within 6 months of the leave cycle, but employers often carry over leave by written agreement. Unused leave must still be paid out on termination. Some employers have a "use it or lose it" policy โ check your employment contract and company policy.
In the first 6 months of employment, sick leave accrues at 1 day for every 26 days worked. After 6 months (and from the start of the 3-year cycle), employees are entitled to the full 30 days. This means a new employee may only have 1โ5 sick days available in the first few months.
