How We Calculate Electricity Cost

kWh per day = (Wattage รท 1,000) ร— hours per day Monthly kWh = kWh per day ร— days per month Monthly Cost = Monthly kWh ร— Tariff (R/kWh)

Example: Electric Geyser Cost

3,000W Geyser โ€” 2 hours/day โ€” R2.80/kWh

kWh/day = (3,000 รท 1,000) ร— 2 = 6 kWh/day

Monthly kWh = 6 ร— 30 = 180 kWh/month

Monthly Cost = 180 ร— R2.80 = R504/month

Annual Cost = R504 ร— 12 = R6,048/year

Tip: A geyser blanket and timer can cut this cost by 20โ€“30%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eskom's Homelight (residential) tariff for 2025/2026 is approximately R2.80 per kWh including VAT. Municipal tariffs vary โ€” Cape Town charges around R3.20/kWh, while Johannesburg City Power charges about R2.90/kWh. Always check your electricity bill for the exact rate applicable to you.
Monthly cost = (Wattage รท 1000) ร— hours per day ร— days per month ร— tariff. For a 3,000W geyser running 2 hours/day for 30 days at R2.80/kWh: (3000รท1000) ร— 2 ร— 30 ร— 2.80 = R504/month.
In a typical SA home: 1) Electric geyser (3,000W โ€” 40โ€“50% of bill), 2) Tumble dryer (2,500W), 3) Electric stove/oven (2,000โ€“2,400W), 4) Air conditioner/heater (2,000W), 5) Pool pump (750W, but runs for hours daily).
Install a geyser timer or solar geyser (saves 40โ€“50% of your bill), switch to LED lighting, use cold water for washing, install a pool pump timer, add ceiling insulation, and consider solar panels with battery backup.
Slightly โ€” but savings are often offset by food spoilage and generator fuel costs. A solar + battery system provides the real savings: typically R500โ€“R2,000/month depending on system size and usage.
