NSC Pass Types Explained
The National Senior Certificate (NSC) has three pass types, each granting access to different post-school paths:
- Bachelor Pass: 4 subjects at 50%+ (including Mathematics at 50%+) + home language 40%+ → university degree admission
- Diploma Pass: 4 subjects at 50%+ + home language 40%+ (without Maths requirement) → diploma programmes
- Higher Certificate Pass: Home language 40%+ and 3 subjects at 40%+ → certificate programmes

Home language 40%+, Mathematics (not Maths Literacy) 50%+, and 4 subjects at 50%+ (excluding Life Orientation). This gives access to degree programmes at all South African universities.
Yes. Supplementary exams are offered in January/February. You can also rewrite subjects through the November Senior Certificate examinations (for adults) to improve your pass type or upgrade for university entry.
No. Mathematical Literacy cannot be used to qualify for a Bachelor Pass. You need Mathematics (the full paper) at 50%+ for a Bachelor Pass.
