How to Use the Grade Calculator

Add each assessment (assignment, test, project, exam) as a row. Enter the score as a percentage and the weight (how much it counts towards your final mark). Weights don't need to add up to exactly 100%, but ideally they should.

The calculator shows your weighted average and the corresponding SA symbol from Not Achieved (1) to Outstanding (7). Use the Extended Calculator to find what score you need on your final exam to reach a target grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Symbol 7 (80–100%): Outstanding; Symbol 6 (70–79%): Meritorious; Symbol 5 (60–69%): Substantial; Symbol 4 (50–59%): Adequate; Symbol 3 (40–49%): Moderate; Symbol 2 (30–39%): Elementary; Symbol 1 (0–29%): Not Achieved.
Multiply each score by its weight, sum the results, then divide by the total weight. Example: Test (60%, weight 30) + Exam (70%, weight 70) = (60×30 + 70×70)/100 = 67%. Weights don't have to sum to 100% — the formula normalises automatically.
Requirements vary widely. Top courses (Medicine, Law, Engineering) require 70–85%+ average. Most BCom/BA programs need 60–70%. Teaching programs generally require 50–65%. You also need a minimum APS score and specific subject requirements. Always check the official university prospectus.
For the NSC, cum laude (distinction pass) requires a final average of 70%+ with no subject below 70% (excluding Life Orientation). At university, cum laude typically requires 75%+ average depending on the institution.
Formula: Required Exam Score = (Target Mark − Year Mark × Year Weight) / Exam Weight. The "Final Exam Calculator" tab in the Extended section does this automatically. Enter your current year mark, the year mark's weight, and your target final mark.
