Frequently Asked Questions

In South Africa, 1 standard cup = 250 mL. So 1 litre = exactly 4 cups. Note that a US cup is 236.6 mL, so a US recipe "1 cup" is slightly less than a SA cup.
In South Africa (and most metric countries), 1 tablespoon = 15 mL, and 1 teaspoon = 5 mL. US tablespoons are also 15 mL, so this conversion is consistent.
A US gallon = 3.785 litres, while a UK (Imperial) gallon = 4.546 litres. Always check which gallon is meant when converting fuel economy figures between SA (L/100km), US (mpg), and UK (mpg) — they use different gallons.
A standard wine bottle in South Africa is 750 mL (0.75 litres). A magnum is 1.5 L, a jeroboam is 3 L. A 750 mL bottle fills approximately 5 standard 150 mL wine glasses.
