About the South African Rand
The South African Rand (ZAR, symbol R) has been the currency of South Africa since 1961, when it replaced the South African pound at a rate of 2 rand to 1 pound. The rand is also legal tender in Namibia, Eswatini, and Lesotho (through the Common Monetary Area). The Namibian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the rand.
The rand is a floating currency and its exchange rate fluctuates based on commodity prices (especially gold and platinum), interest rate decisions by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), and broader emerging market sentiment.
