How to Use This Calculator
Enter area dimensions, tile size in millimetres, grout joint width, and waste factor. Use 10% for straight-lay patterns and 15–20% for diagonal or herringbone. The calculator gives total tiles required.
Tile Calculation Formula
Total Area = Length × Width
Tile Area (with grout) = (Tile L + Grout) × (Tile W + Grout)
Base Tiles = Total Area ÷ Tile Area
Total = Base Tiles × (1 + Waste%)

Example Calculation
Kitchen & Dining — 8m × 6m, 600×600mm tiles, 3mm grout
Tile area with grout = 0.603 × 0.603 = 0.3636 m²
Base tiles = 48 ÷ 0.3636 = 132 tiles
With 10% waste = 146 tiles. Order 150.

Frequently Asked Questions
Rectified tiles (precision-cut): 2–3mm joints. Standard tiles: 3–5mm. Floor tiles where lippage may occur: 5mm minimum. Rustic or handmade tiles: 8–12mm. Larger joints are less prone to cracking but show more grout.
Add 15–20% waste for diagonal (45°) tile laying, as more cuts are required along all walls. Herringbone also requires 15%. Straight-lay in square rooms needs only 10%. Buy extra from the same batch to avoid colour variation.
Ceramic floor tiles: R100–R300/m². Porcelain: R200–R600/m². Large-format polished porcelain: R500–R1,500/m². Natural stone: R600–R2,000+/m². Compare per m² prices at Italtile, Ceramic Industries, and Builders Warehouse.
Yes. For floors larger than 5–6m in any direction, install expansion joints at approximately 4.5–6m intervals and at any structural joint. Use flexible sealant (not grout) in expansion joints to allow thermal movement.
