How to Use the Sand Calculator

Enter your area's length, width, and depth in metres. Select the sand type — building, plaster, river, or fill sand — and the calculator instantly shows you volume, weight, 50kg bag count, and estimated cost in ZAR.

For depth: 100mm = 0.1m, 50mm = 0.05m, 25mm = 0.025m. The Extended Calculator below handles multiple areas and different shapes. The Professional Calculator creates a full project sand budget.

Sand Usage Rules of Thumb

Common SA construction sand requirements:

Bricklaying mortar: 0.5 m³ of building sand per 1,000 standard bricks (1:4 cement:sand mix)

Plastering: 0.015 m³ of plaster sand per m² at 15mm thickness (approx. 25kg per m²)

Paving bedding: 0.025 m³ of river sand per m² at 25mm thickness

Concrete (1:2:3 mix): 0.66 m³ of sand per m³ of concrete

Truck load: Standard tipper truck carries 6 m³ (approx. 9.6 tonnes)

Bulk vs Bag Sand in South Africa

For projects needing more than 1–2 m³, bulk delivery is almost always more economical. A 50kg retail bag costs R65–R85 (R1,300–R1,700/m³), compared to R400–R700/m³ for bulk delivery. However, bags are convenient for small patch repairs and garden projects where access for a truck is difficult.

Always add a 10% waste allowance to your calculated volume to account for spillage, compaction settling, and irregular ground surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions — Sand Calculator SA

Multiply Length (m) × Width (m) × Depth (m) to get the volume in cubic metres. Then multiply by 1.6 for the weight in tonnes. For example: a 5m × 3m patio at 50mm depth = 5 × 3 × 0.05 = 0.75 m³ = 1.2 tonnes. Our calculator does this automatically and adds bag counts and cost estimates.
Building sand is coarser and suitable for bricklaying mortar and general fill. Plaster sand is fine-grained, washed, and used for plastering walls and ceilings to achieve a smooth finish. Using the wrong sand type leads to weak mortar joints or rough plaster finishes. Always specify the correct type when ordering.
A cubic metre of dry sand weighs approximately 1.6 tonnes (1,600 kg). Wet sand can be heavier at 1.8–2.0 t/m³. This matters for truck load calculations — a standard 6 m³ tipper carries about 9.6 tonnes of dry sand.
One cubic metre of sand weighs about 1,600 kg, so you need approximately 32 bags of 50kg sand per m³. At R65–R85 per bag retail, that's R2,080–R2,720 per m³ — much more expensive than bulk delivery at R400–R700/m³. Bags are best for small quantities under about 0.5 m³.
2026 South African bulk sand prices: Fill sand R250–R400/m³; River sand R350–R500/m³; Building sand R400–R600/m³; Plaster sand R500–R700/m³. Prices exclude delivery, which typically adds R300–R800 depending on distance. Gauteng and Western Cape prices tend to be higher than KZN and Limpopo.
