How to Use the Flooring Calculator
Enter room dimensions, select your flooring type, and add a wastage percentage. The calculator shows area, tile/plank counts, and cost estimates based on 2024 South African retail prices including installation.
The Extended Calculator adds tile-by-tile counting, plank quantities, and multi-room totalling. The Professional Calculator covers floor screed, underfloor heating pipe layout, and skirting board quantities.

Tile Calculation Formula
Room area = length × width (m²)
Tiles needed = ⌈(area × (1 + wastage)) ÷ tile size⌉
Grout bags = ⌈area ÷ coverage per bag⌉
For diagonal lay: add 15–20% wastage
Tile size 600×600 = 0.36 m² per tile
Tile size 300×300 = 0.09 m² per tile

Frequently Asked Questions
Tiles = ceil((area × 1.1) ÷ tile size). For 20m² with 600×600mm tiles: ceil(22 ÷ 0.36) = 62 tiles. Buy in full boxes — most SA suppliers sell by the box (5–10 tiles). Order from one batch to avoid shade variation.
Budget tiles from Tile Africa or Builders start at R120/m². Mid-range R250–R400/m². Porcelain and imported tiles R500+/m². Installation R180–R280/m² by a tiler. Full cost including waterproofing (wet areas): R450–R800/m².
10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal or herringbone, 20% for complex rooms. Keep spare tiles for repairs — production batches differ in shade. Never buy exact quantities.
Laminate: wood fibre core, not waterproof, warps if wet. Best for bedrooms and living areas. Vinyl (LVT/SPC): waterproof plastic core, suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries. SPC (stone plastic composite) is more rigid and durable than LVT.
Min 25mm over concrete slab, 40mm over UFH pipes. Mix ratio 1:4 (cement:sharp sand). Cure at 1 day per mm before tiling. Use SBR bonding agent on dusty or contaminated slabs. Level with a gauge rod and spirit level.
