Frequently Asked Questions
An informal rotating savings club — one of the oldest financial institutions in Africa. About 11 million South Africans participate, contributing ~R50 billion annually. Studies show stokvel members save 15–20% more than non-members of similar income.
12 members × R500/month = R6,000 pot. Member 1 receives R6,000 in January, Member 2 in February, etc. Each contributes R6,000/year and receives R6,000 — interest-free credit for those who receive early, forced saving for those who receive late.
NASASA registration is free and voluntary but provides legal protection. Essential: written constitution, signature by all members, dedicated bank account. FNB, Nedbank, Absa offer free stokvel accounts with preferential interest rates on balances over R10,000.
Rotating stokvel payouts (return of contributions) are not taxable. Interest earned on stokvel bank balances is taxable per the member's individual interest exemption (R23,800/year for under 65s). Investment stokvels using FSP-licensed intermediaries must comply with FAIS.
Members contribute weekly from January to November. Total pool paid out in November/December for Christmas shopping, school fees, and January back-to-school costs. 15 members × R200/week × 48 weeks = R144,000 total, R9,600 per member.
